Heavy rain across Western Germany turned Frankfurt Airport into a lake on Wednesday night. Operations were temporarily suspended for more than two hours after the runway was overwhelmed by floodwater. The runway was inundated with floodwater while lightning flashed overhead. As Germany’s largest airport and major European hub, the flooding caused masssive travel disturbances, with 90 flights cancelled. Many were forced to spend the night on camp beds or in hotels. Some passengers were unable to disembark from their planes after landing.
