In a video posted to Emeka Iwueze’s official YouTube channel, it is stated that five days before, the American traveller to Sri Lanka began a street food tour with the goal of getting to know the local fare. Iwueze would wander the streets on his journeys, trying out different foods and striking up amicable chats with residents to gain a deeper understanding of the social dynamics and culture.
Iwueze visited a food stand after sampling a number of dishes, where the vendor presented items including chicken Kottu, shellfish and string hopper Kottu. When Iwueze asked for the pricing after choosing a spicy fish Kottu, the vendor responded with a quote of Rs. 1,900. But when the business owner abruptly stopped the order and aggressively told Iwueze to go if he wasn’t interested, things got way out of hand.
The dealer justified the cost in a heated conversation, citing religious beliefs and claiming to be honest. Threats from the owner eventually drove Iwueze to leave, even though he tried to settle the matter calmly.
